Humble Beginnings
The Music Box Village of New Orleans concept started in 2010, thanks to Delaney Martin and Jay Pennington. Its inception was the creation of a musical house called the Dythyrambalina. This initial project catapulted the two artists to create the Music Box Village we know today, which found its permanent home in 2016.
About the Music Box Village
The historic Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans is where the Music Box Village resides. It is an array of musical houses designed to be their own musical instruments. Every structure within the houses is crafted uniquely from scrap metal, wood, and even recycled materials. Patrons are encouraged to walk through each house and experiment with each instrument in ways they usually would not.
Each of these houses creates a unique soundscape, intoxicating to the ears. The Music Box Village is not just for the enjoyment of music lovers. It also represents the tenacity and resilience of New Orleans as a whole. From the residents to the city itself, the Music Box Village represents the determination of the city to bounce back from the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Experiences
The Music Box Village of New Orleans offers its patrons many experiences, including children’s educational courses involving art, music, and fabrication. Unlike most exhibits or museums, patrons are encouraged to interact with the musical displays as much as possible.
